The average online tax calculator starts with an email signup, then a “free trial” pitch, then a $50/month upsell. This one is the opposite: enter your numbers, see your tax, close the tab. No account, no email, no tracking pixel.

What This Calculator Does

Enter your filing status, annual income, state, and any adjustments (deductions, credits, capital gains, self-employment income). The calculator returns:

  • Federal income tax (using 2025 brackets, with 2026 inflation-adjusted option)
  • State income tax (using 2025 brackets for all 50 states + DC)
  • FICA (Social Security + Medicare) for W-2 wages
  • Self-employment tax (15.3%) if toggled
  • Capital gains tax split between long-term and short-term
  • Effective tax rate and marginal tax rate
  • After-tax income (take-home)

Privacy: What We Do Not Collect

The calculator is a single HTML page. It runs in your browser. Specifically:

  • No analytics scripts (no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no Fathom)
  • No fingerprinting (no canvas, no font, no audio fingerprint)
  • No cookies (not even first-party session cookies)
  • No form submission (the form is JS-only; nothing is POSTed anywhere)
  • No remote calls (the tax bracket data is embedded in the JS bundle)
  • No email, no signup, no account

You can verify this by opening browser DevTools, going to the Network tab, and using the calculator. You will see zero outbound requests.

Quick Example: Single Filer, $75,000 W-2, Texas (No State Tax)

  • Federal tax: $10,891 (after $14,600 standard deduction)
  • FICA: $5,738
  • State tax: $0 (Texas has no state income tax)
  • Total tax: $16,629
  • Effective rate: 22.2%
  • Take-home: $58,371

Same example in California:

  • Federal: $10,891
  • FICA: $5,738
  • CA state: $3,612
  • Total: $20,241
  • Effective rate: 27.0%

The calculator shows both side-by-side for the same input — useful if you are considering a move.

Self-Employment Tax

Toggle self-employment and enter your net SE income (profit from Schedule C). The calculator:

  1. Adds 15.3% (12.4% Social Security on first $168,600 of combined SE + W-2, plus 2.9% Medicare on all SE income)
  2. Deducts half of the SE tax from your gross income (an above-the-line adjustment)
  3. Recalculates federal income tax on the reduced base

The result is the total federal + SE tax plus the employer-equivalent share that a W-2 employee would not see on their paystub.

Capital Gains

Enter long-term and short-term gains separately. The calculator:

  • Applies the 0% / 15% / 20% LTCG brackets based on your taxable income
  • Applies ordinary rates to short-term gains (no preferential treatment)
  • Adds the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax if your modified AGI exceeds $200K (single) or $250K (married)

If you have both W-2 income and capital gains, the calculator computes the federal tax on each bucket separately and shows the combined total.

Limitations

  • It does not handle AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax). For complex situations with ISOs, add the AMT calculation manually.
  • It does not handle K-1 partnership income beyond capital gains distributions.
  • It does not e-file. It is a planning tool; file with IRS Free File, a CPA, or tax software for the actual return.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tax year does this calculator use?

The calculator uses 2025 federal brackets (the most recent year with finalized IRS data) and 2025 state brackets for all 50 U.S. states + DC. For tax year 2026 planning, the calculator adds a 2.7% inflation adjustment to federal brackets by default.

Do I need to sign up or provide an email?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. We do not store inputs, do not require an account, do not collect your email, and do not include any analytics that follow you off this page.

Does it handle self-employment tax?

Yes. Toggle the self-employment switch, enter your net SE income, and the calculator adds the 15.3% SE tax (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) plus the deduction for half of SE tax.

Does it handle capital gains?

Yes. Enter long-term and short-term gains separately. The calculator applies the 0%/15%/20% LTCG brackets based on your total income, and ordinary rates to short-term gains.
